Couch to 5K

Need some motivation to get from the couch to 5k? Step 1: go here. Step 2: sign up for a marathon! I’m not talking about a crazy all day race that takes months of training and a super strict diet. There are quite a few FUN races that are available around the country. Here are some:

The Color Run – This race is more about looking tie-dyed than speed. You wear all white and each kilometer has a designated color where you are blitzed by volunteers until you finish the 3 miles. Make sure you have a camera ready for your Picasso-ish full body look at the finish line. Here are the locations for 2013. [I’m eyeing that New Orleans race 2/9]

Muddy Buddy – If you want to get even dirtier, then this one is for you. The Mud Run is 3 to 4.5 miles with 8-10 obstacles, not for the faint of heart. This is a team race and you finish together in a mud pit! The Bike & Run is 6-7 miles with 5 obstacles. You switch with your buddy between running and biking every mile. Ok, that one might need some more training. There is even a Mini Race for kids 4-11 years old.

Warrior Dash – This one also involves mud and is a 5k with at least 12 obstacles. Each warrior is individually timed and encouraged to wear a costume. The Dash is finished with a festival! You get complimentary beer, a Warrior helmet, a Dash medal, and get to enjoy live music partying with the other warriors. Maybe you won’t win fastest time but there is also a prize for the best costume.

You don’t have to necessarily be a runner to enjoy these races. Get a group of friends to sign up with you and go have fun. Of course, there is motivation to make it to the finish line. But you don’t have to be a winner to become a legend! Just ask this guy.      ~Dutch
